the rain snow mix will be confined to the sowlingt. we will continue to detail the timing of this storm and how much southern maryland could see when we come back in the full forecast. >> our big story this morning, after two weeks of intense testimony and several delays, both the defense and prosecution have rested in the george huguely trial.

>> he is cuesed of killing -- he is accused of killing his exgirlfriend, cockeysville native, yeardley love. >> a jury must now decide whether george huguely killed yeardley love on purpose, unintentionally, or simply not at all. before george huguely's fate was to be put in the hands of a jury, the defense called one last medical witness, a neurosurgeon, who said in his opinion yeardley love's brain did not have injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. jury instructions were read, and arguments began. chapman reminded the jury of the

second-degree murder, as well as voluntary and involuntary manslaughter. lowell melzer, wbal-tv 11 news. >> thanks, lowell. the jury will not begin deliberation until wednesday because monday is a holiday and grand jurors are meeting at the court house on tuesday. >> jurors will soon begin to analyze whether george huguely intended to cause harm to yeardley love when he went to her apartment two years ago. local defense attorney steve allen said the time it takes them to come to their conclusion could be indicative of their final verdict. if you have a quick verdict you will have a second-degree murder. a longer verdict, in my judgment, would be more likely to lead to manslaughter. >> manslaughter would carry a 10-year maximum penalty. second-degree, a maximum 40-year, and first-degree, life.
5:05 am
>> the defense is hoping, since he's already been in jail two years, would mean he'd serve another four years and then be out. >> the jurors could lead toward a manslaughter verdict if they believed george huguely didn't intend to kill the cockeysville native. if they say he intentionally harmed love, they could come back with a second-degree verdict. >> in the end of the day they will have to decide what was in his mind and his heart and whether or not they believe an unexpected confrontation took place inside that apartment that got out of control oral alternatively that he intended to harm her. >> sheldon dutes, wbal-tv 11 news. >> stay tuned to wbal both online and on the air. you can see lowell melzer's report and pictures online in a special extended coverage section on wbaltv.com.

outside tells you that our latest snowstorm, no more. we did know that there was a possibility it coo pass to our south. it looks like that is the most likely case. let's look at the temperatures right now. it is not bad to start off the february morning in the 30's in the baltimore metro area. as we head more toward the pennsylvania line, it is 30 in parkton. colder as you head north as we normally expect this time of year. also colder as you head into the western part of the state. 21 is the current temperature in oakland. here's the current weather pattern. we have clouds in place. we could see the rain showers in southern virginia back into west virginia. even in the highest elevations of the mountains. that storm system is heading our way. let's go back to that graphic and put it in motion. you have two pieces of the storm. the first of which is moving off shore.
7:15 am
that was with the carolinas overnight. the second piece of it now pushing across the gulf coast states from tennessee into kentucky has a northern fringe of it with snow. there is really not a lot of cold air associated with this storm. it is taking more of a southerly track. all that adding up to the minimal chances of snow today in baltimore. here's the forecast for today. expecting a high of 45 with mostly cloudy skies. then as you head further south, there is a chance there could be a rain-snow mix this afternoon and evening. not a lot of accumulation. but it is maybe possible. i think baltimore is the northern edge of any sort of snow accumulation. let's put the futurecast in motion and see what happens here. here is the first piece of the storm that moves off shore. the second piece moving south of us. that rain-snow line sends that white and blue shading through central virginia into southern maryland. that's basically the only chances we have of accumulating snow. this is basically what i'm expecting for today. minimal chances for snow from baltimore all the way down toward d.c. heading over dover
7:16 am
as well. as you head into southern maryland, meaning back toward ocean city, there could be trace amounts of snow up to 2 inches. that is about it of what could accumulate. into the late evening hours, the bulk of the snow will be back in vavafment the rain-snow micks stays mostly -- the rain snow-mix stays mostly back into virginia. 48 into the afternoon monday. then as we head into the week, warming things up. each and every day, a slight chance for rain. >> still ahead, a prom dress. >> but first, in "medical alert" advances that could reduce your fear of going to the dentist. >> and we're taking -- more

the dental fears clinic up in washington was that actually 50% of americans do not go to the dentist. they do not even go to the dentist. the bulk of that reason is that they have a fear of going. so my passion throughout my close to 25 combrears years in dentist ri is to find out what is it that bothers people going to the dentist? if you think about it, dentistry doesn't hurt. you can do an extraction and it depuzzn't hurt. >> what are people afraid of? >> what actually hurts is the injection. the treaded dental injection. that's the first part of the appointment tha a patient experiences. once you are already numb, you won't feel the rest of the appointment. what i did was found a great way to alleviate the dental pain. it is a certain device a dentist will hold. we made it look like a toothbrush. >> in this manner, you are not afraid of it.
7:21 am
what happens, it has a buzzing sound. at the end of it, it is just buzzing. it is a certain sensation you will feel in the mouth. >> you notice it actually pulsing. that was scientific research. let me turn the buzzing off for now. what will happen, the dentist will place it in the person's mouth and while it is vibrating, the dentist does the shot. a vibration travels to the brain faster than the sensation of pain. so the vibration gets there first, you shut the gate, and you no longer feel the sensation of pain. >> that's incredible. >> it is a phenomenon. i thought of this idea several yeards ago. it took me eight years to get here to this point. at this point thousands of people. it is a phenomenon. for children, we have little
7:22 am
toys that they pick out. they would choose one of these tiny pupp ement ts. what happens is the dentist places this in the patient's mouth, and while giving the injection, the child is looking at the toy. 10 or 15 seconds they are done anyway, and they no longer feel the injection pain. they associate getting an injection without pain. for the rest of their lives they will never worry about going to the dentist because the only fear was the injection. you take the pain away, they never worry about going to the dentist. >> it is good to get them in early to know it isn't something to be afraid of. >> they really shouldn't have that fear. one of the greatest fears for children is the fear of the unnope. they are afraid of what to expect when they go to the dentist. if parents can tell their children a story about the
7:23 am
chair. the tental has a tooth counter to count the teeth. that's actually how we're counting for calfities. if they know what to expect. there are all sorts of books, "barney goes to the dentist" that we used with my children growing up so they didn't have a fear of going to the dentist. another thing is parents should not inflict any kind of negative at tudetude about going to the dentist. they should never tell their children about that. it is a positive experience. it is a great place to go. with things like dental vibe, you don't have to worry about the pain anymore. >> we are out of time. thank you so much. prepare your kid and find a kid who will be a partner in that. >> thanks, dr. goldberg. we appreciate that. >> when we come back, prom dresses for a good cause. first a look at events going on around town this weekend.
7:24 am
7:25 am
7:26 am
>> welcome back. the second annual red cross project is coming up. this year miss maryland is the project chair. thank you for being here. >> thank you. i love being here. >> this is something near and dear to your heart as you work closely with the red cross. >> yes, i work with the red cross as well as disaster prom dress.
7:27 am
i participate in a lot of upcoming events. >> if women cannot afford a prom dress, where and how much? >> the howard county ymca from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon. the dresses are in three price ranges. $25, $50. so good, economic prices for gorgeous gowns we are going to see. >> let's see the first gown. who is with us today? >> rachel. >> rachel is with us today. this is a real winner. it is simple, so you can really pair it with accessories. >> how much will this go for? >> i believe this one will be $25 or 50. >> that's a great deal. so how many dresses did you have donated or available?
7:28 am
>> we have collected 700 dresses this year. last year we had 300. and this is another really good example. it is a baby blue david bridal strapless gown with the beading and the lace detail on the sides. it is just a beautiful selection. another $50. >> $50, and you are ready for the prom, except for a couple accessories. a lot of moms and daughters out there. >> you have access to these gorgeous dresses for economic prices while at the same time that money southbounding donated back into the red -- is being donated to the red cross. >> last year you raised $1,000? >> yes. >> this year hopefully it will be double. $10,000 to help all those families. >> great stuff.
7:29 am
again, it is on february 26, 10:00. get there, get there early. the dresses, i'm sure, will go quickly. >> there was a line last year. >> thank you for coming in. >> good luck with everything. >> all right. >> the time is 7:29. 34 degrees on tv hill. much more coming up. stay with us. you are watching "11 news sunday morning."
7:30 am
7:31 am
>> welcome back to "11 news sunday morning." ava marie is here. >> she is disappointed about the snow. >> i have mixed feelings. we haven't had any. >> basically, we knew the storm could be a tricky one. we knew it could take one or two paths. we have mostly cloudy skies ahead of that storm. you can see it is mostly down in the south and east. the norpe fringe of it could -- the northern fringe of it could britain precipitation. i think we may see a couple flakes this afternoon. that's basically about it.
7:32 am
we'll keep talking about that chance for snow when we come back in the forecast. >> time now for a look at what's coming up on "meet the press" this morning. david gregory joins us with a preview. >> so taxes, the budget, and the deficit all coming up in d.c. >> there is a focus on the jobless rate. we're hearing about auto bail outs and whether manufacturing is coming back. we have chris van hollen on the program to talk about people taking over the race. there is talk about faith, gay marriage, contraception. and there is a real question i will ask them about whether this is what republicans want to be running on. who does it help politically that there is a return to these social issues in the general election as we get into the fall?
7:33 am
>> speaking of the primary campaign, we have a very interesting race shaping up for the primary next week. we have rick santorum looking like he might upset favorite son mitt romney. what's at stake here. if you can, what will happen? >> the fact it is that close and santorum has the edge right now is bad news for romney. the reality is that the volatility in the field continues. there seems to be a conservative favorite out there who is emerging and leaving gingrich a bit in the shadows and that is rick santorum. i think if santorum is able to gain momentum in michigan, it is katie bar the door. so this is a very touch-and-go time right now. i think there is a lot of anxiety about how it is all
7:34 am
going to kind up. >> you said it. thank you, david. don't forget, you can watch "meet the press" later this morning at 10:00. right here following "11 news sunday morning" at 9:00 a.m. >> also, maryland's lieutenant governor will be our guest later this morning on 11 news. if you have a question send it to sundayquestions@wbaltv.com. >> still ahead on 11 news, barcs joins us with a pet looking for a good home. >> and e-mail your questions to tax questions at wbaltv.com. >> and the winter storm with a southerly track.ra
7:35 am
7:36 am
7:37 am
>> good morning. good sunday morning to you. of course, the day is here. the day we were talking about that storm. a direct hit with rain or snow in baltimore or it would stay to the south. it looks like it has finally made up its mind and it is passing mostly down to our south. we can see it on doppler. with rain showers toward virginia that rain is making its way toward charlottesville. rain could move into garrett county. other than that, anything showing up on the radar in central maryland not reaching the ground. this is basically off to our west and down to our south as well. let's see how that storm is setting up now. this one over alabama is developing.
7:38 am
it is bringing heavy rain from tennessee to kentucky. just a thin line of snow from kentucky to central areas of virginia. right now it is not a major snow maker but it will continue to develop as we go throughout the day. in baltimore, we have upper 30's and 40's along the eastern shore. it is much colder. 30 in parkton. 30 in westminster. only in the 20's in western maryland right now. i think they are going to be very light. we are not expecting a lot of accumulation. we are talking about the bulkheading into our way. it will mostly stay into our south between southern maryland in st. mary's back into ocean city. maybe we get a couple flakes on the northern fringe of it. here's what the futurecast is showing now. this is starting right now at 7:00 a.m. this passes to our south. we get the rain-snow mix on the
7:39 am
tail end of the storm late into the evening hours and some of that could accumulate late tonight. this is what i'm thinking as far as accumulation goes. very minimal chances from anyone from baltimore to d.c. to see any snow on the ground by the late evening hours. your best chances are going to be from st. mary's down into ocean city. even that will be minimal. it is only going to stick on grassy areas. if anything, the roads will stay completely wet. we have a bull's-eye of the snow back in central virginia 2 to 6 inches maximum. so this storm is not going to be even heavy. rain or snow a possibility throughout the evening hours. gradually clearing as we head into the night. beautiful conditions. you may have the day off. you can enjoy it outdoors. 52 on tuesday. rain chances then into the week. minimal for now. those temperatures will be warming up. >> now to answer your tax
7:40 am
questions, pam smith from king, king, king & associates. >> you are in the thick of it. >> people coming in early. >> yes. >> let's get to some of those questions that we had. i work at a company that gets paid mileage. is that a deduction somewhere. >> first it depends on whether the employees are including it on their w-2. >> if they are including it in the w-2, they may be able to record it as a business expense. if it is not included on the w-2, it is not taxable to them, so there is no deductible. it depends on if they are using an accountable plan or an unaccountable plan. you might need to find out what kind of plan the ememployer is doing. >> next question. my spouse and i lived in two separate households in 2011. we have not filed for legal separation or divorce. how should we file our taxes? married filed separately or
7:41 am
jointly. >> first, you can't file single because you are still married. you can filed married filing separately. you can also still file married filing jointly. the other option is, if separated, the person who has -- if there are children involved, the person who provided more than 50% of the household for children, they can file head of household. there are your choices. married filing separately or married final filing jointly. >> "i have a child in kinder carten and another in third grade. am i able to count the tuition on my tax return?" >> unfortunately not. tuition through kinder garten through 12th grade is not deductible. you can, however, if there are charges for, say, before and after care, that may qualify for the child's dependent care
7:42 am
credit, but not the tuition itself. >> i am still waiting for my 1099. are there other forms i should wait for before filing? >> january 31 was the deadline. investment companies got a deadline. they had until february 13 to send out 1099-b interest statements. so those investment firms had an extension. everything else should have been by january 31. you think from a mortgage statement or your church. we always say wait a couple weeks to make sure everything is in so you won't have to do an amended return. once you do the return and get something a week later, you will do an amended return. give it another week or so. >> just as a reminder to people, what do they need when they show up at your door? >> your w-2. if you spr a home, you -- if you
7:43 am
have a home, you have your real estate taxes. if you have a business, that's a lot more involved. you kind of look at last year's return. see what you gave them and kind of do the same types. >> thank you so much. we'll see more of the kings next week. if we did not get to your question, we will answer it next week. we can e-mail your questions to wbaltv.com or go to wbaltv.com and click on "consumer alert." >> in you would like to get in touch with the kings 410-486-4500. www.kingking.com. >> stay with us. barcs joins us with a pet looking for a good home. first a look at last night's winning lottery numbers.

>> welcome back. joining us now from b.a.r.c.s. is a pet looking for a good home. debbie, good to see you. >> good to see you. >> who is this? >> this is smoky. he's a 1-year-old pitbull mix. he's what we call a pitbull ambassador which means he has been tested for his temperament. he has been in playgroups. >> there are a lot of misconceptions about the pitbull breed of dogs. >> absolutely. they are loyal dogs.
7:47 am
they were known as the nanny dog back in the 1940's and 1950's. so they are a great family pet. >> what other kind of home would be good for him? >> he would like an active home. he walks well on a leash, but he's pretty energetic. he needs a family to keep him busy. >> and he's wearing a celebration lei right now. you are having special events until the end of february. pitpull mixes or cats are available for adoption for $25. and we are waiving adoption fees for them. >> on tuesday no adoption fees for pitpulls or cats. the only fee would be if you are a city resident $10 for if you mike chip your dog that would be -- microchip your dog, that is $10. they are spayed and neutered.

7:53 am
cooking with no salt. >> what are you making? >> today we are making a spinach french toast. one of the things i try to teach children is to eat vegetables. one of the things i have in the cafeteria is "vegetable time!" we want the children to eat vegetables. one way to do it is in french toast. so when dinner mom says she's ready to cook pain spinach, she will say remember we had spinach in the french toast and how good it was? and that kind of gets them into eating the vegetables. >> it almost looks like an herb on there. >> what we do, we side chop the spinach. what brie is doing is micking nutmeg and cinnamon on apples. we want to top this from -- with carm he willized apples. we want to eliminate the sugar. >> and you are using olive oil?
7:54 am
>> exactly. we want to mix this up and pour this right in the pan. >> about how long do the apples have to cook? >> two to three minutes. then we flip it over. some people like the crunchy texture, so we take the spatula. i like it half done. >> do you like it crunchy or softer? >> crunchy. >> very good. >> we keep the children's safety hazard in the kitchen -- we keep the children safety first in the kitchen. what we try to encourage these children is to cook with no salt and low sugar. >> so you are like a mini top chef? >> yes. >> you cook at home? >> yes. i cook with my mother and my grandmother.
7:55 am
>> there is nothing you can do to make me say -- i don't know anything about cookies. >> the greatest thing about this program, we teach the children the art of gormet cooking. >> they learn about herbs and spices. in this particular dish, to eliminate the sugar from the syrup, we would pour it over our french toast that already has some wet texture to it. >> how to get a copy of today's recipe go to our web site at wbaltv.com and click on recipes. but if you don't mind waiting a few days, send a self-addressed envelope to "sunday brunch" at 3800 hooper avenue, baltimore, maryland 21211. so we have a look at what the finished plate looks like.

and it smells so good. >> no salt, no sugar. the carmelized apple created a glaze. >> no sugar, no salt, no snow, ava, is that right? >> well, a slight chance south. we dry out tomorrow. 48 for presidents day. >> chef brie and chef connie, thank you very much. >> have a good day. captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org--

>> when yeardley love died nearly two years ago, so many questions of why and how cam to mind. now with the trial of her accused boyfriend, george huguely, those questions have been answered and a new one asked. why did no one speak up? there is no doubt from the testimony that has played out in court that friends and teammates at u.v.a. were aware of the relationship between the couple was less than ideal. mix in alcohol and jealousy and that reluctance by others to get involved ultimately compromised love's safety. it would be easy to say these were the mistakes of youth, but that is hardly the case. nearly 22% of all women 18 or over are physically assaulted by a partner at least once in her lifetime. in all cases of domestic violence there are wank signs. women -- and women that find themselves in these volatile relationships need help. if you suspect there are problems, there are places you can call. after all, it can be too late if
